PME 800 Week 5 Reflection: Project Complete

"Self-regulation is not a mental ability or an academic performance skill; rather it is the self-directive process by which learners transform their mental abilities into academic skills. Learning is viewed as an activity that students do for themselves in a proactive way rather than as a covert event that happens to them in reaction to teaching.  Self-regulation refers to self-generated thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that are oriented to attaining goals" (Zimmerman, 2002).

I am excited to share my completed website about Dyslexia. Upon completion of this project, I feel a tremendous amount of satisfaction and pride. This website is the product of weeks of research, design, reflection, and examination of feedback.

When I began this learning process I had many goals in mind. First, to create a resource that would be comprehensible and user-friendly that would allow teachers at my school to understand how to meet the needs of students with Dyslexia in the classroom. Second, I wanted to dive into research in order to ensure that I was current on intervention practices, and strategies for students with Dyslexia. I also wanted to continue to harness and develop my own ability to be a better self-regulated learner. Two areas I really wanted to improve upon as a SRL was creating a regular opportunity for reflection and seeking out and using feedback.

I spent a substantial amount of time setting my distal and proximal goals. When setting these goals I reflected on what I already knew about myself as a learner to set goals that I thought were both challenging and attainable within the given time frame. One thing I did differently with this inquiry than in my past learning was to create a graphic for my proximal and distal learning goals that I continually referred to throughout the learning process. By having my goals displayed in a visual way it helped me to review them more often and stay on target.

During my performance phase, I set up weekly plans in order to reach my proximal goals. By having a well-organized plan for researching and later to work on my website I was able to monitor myself and better manage my time. The area I feel I grew the most through this process was in reflecting. While I have gone through the process of reflecting on my performance in the past, this was the first time I created a written blog to record my reflection. During my weekly blog I reflected on three questions, 1) Did I reach my proximal goals? 2) What were my challenges? 3) How do I need to revise my planning based on what I know now? This process of reflection helped me to refine my plan in order to continue to make progress toward my distal learning goal.

Throughout this process, I also grew in my ability to seek out feedback. In my effort to become a better SRL I spent time thinking about how and when I should get feedback about my learning process. For this project, I wanted to ensure that the resource I created would be useful for the target audience. During the last week of my project, I shared my website with peers at my school. The feedback was tremendously helpful. I organized the feedback into praise and questions/areas of improvement. As I completed final edits of the website I was able to make changes based on the feedback. I noticed that this feedback allowed me to further commit to my goals and helped to refocus my attention toward creating a website that would be a useful tool for teachers at my school.

My Next Steps:

I plan to share my website with teachers and principals at my school. I plan to celebrate the completion of this project by going out to dinner with my husband. I want to continue to refine my own skills as a Self Regulated Learner. I plan to revisit the distal goals I set with my principal at the start of the year and write proximal to help me to work toward achieving these goals. I also want to schedule regular opportunities for me to reflect on my learning process and seek out feedback from others. In my classroom, I also want to continue to create an opportunity for students to learn strategies and receive feedback about their own SRL.
