PME 800 Week 5 Reflection: Project Complete

"Self-regulation is not a mental ability or an academic performance skill; rather it is the self-directive process by which learners transform their mental abilities into academic skills. Learning is viewed as an activity that students do for themselves in a proactive way rather than as a covert event that happens to them in reaction to teaching.  Self-regulation refers to self-generated thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that are oriented to attaining goals" (Zimmerman, 2002). I am excited to share my completed website about Dyslexia. Upon completion of this project, I feel a tremendous amount of satisfaction and pride. This website is the product of weeks of research, design, reflection, and examination of feedback. When I began this learning process I had many goals in mind. First, to create a resource that would be comprehensible and user-friendly that would allow teachers at my school to understand how to meet the needs of students with Dyslexia in t...

PME 800 Week 4 Reflection

Did I achieve this week’s proximal goal? This week my goal was to finish my website and share the completed website with teachers at my school. I wanted to receive feedback about the readability and usefulness of the website. Praise: I found it very visual and informative. It was a place where you can find information about not only what dyslexia is, but how to understand it and many approaches to teach and help students/children learn. I especially like the short videos of information that shared teaching strategies and student voice to their approaches to learning.  There is a lot of great information on here that is easy to access and navigate.I really love how you included videos of what certain teaching strategies look and sound like. Your site looks great.  It's clean and easy to read.  I like how the content is listed in bullet points.  For busy teachers, this is a perfect way to get information quickly and easily.   This looks awesom...

Did I achieve this week's proximal goal? This week my goal was to complete the outline of my website to include the definition of dyslexia and 10 research-based strategies for students with dyslexia. I was able to achieve this proximal goal. I have decided to organize my website into five pages. DefinitionDyslexialxia Signs and Identification Teaching Strategies Classroom Environment Assistive Technology What were my challenges? Time continued to be a challenge this week. After finished report cards comments last week, this week I had parent-teacher conferences and began coaching cheerleading after school Tuesday-Friday. These added responsibilities made it more challenging to stay on target to reach my proximal goals. In order to stay on target to reach my proximal goals, I ended up completing a large amount of work on the weekend rather than distributing it evenly across the week. When working this weekend I found it helpful to create a checklist. How do ...

PME 800 Week Two Reflection

Did I achieve this week's proximal goal? This week my goal was to identify ten research-based strategies for working with students with Dyslexia and to complete the outline for my website. This week I was able to successfully identify ten resources for my website. As I did my research I continued to work to ensure that the strategies and research I used the strategy of asking myself, "How will this help teacher's?" I found that asking this question allowed me to more easily refine my research. As I completed research this week, one area I spent more time researching was the use of assistive technology to help students with Dyslexia. One tool I found particularly interesting was a Chrome extension called Announcify. Unfortunately, I was not able to complete the outline for my website this week. I plan to complete this Monday and Tuesday this week in order to maintain appropriate progress to reach my next proximal goal.  What were my challenges? ...

PME 800 Week One Reflection

Did I achieve this week's proximal goal? This week my goal was to identify five research-based strategies for working with students with Dyslexia. As I began to dive into the research phase of my project I was excited to find an abundance of resources. When I am working to complete this research I am working to keep my target audience in mind. I want to ensure that the strategies and research I share in my final website is easily comprehensible and can be easily implemented in the classroom. One of the resources I was most excited about was a video called What is Dyslexia? by Kelli Sandman-Hurley. This video presents statistics and brain research about Dyslexia in a highly relatable and comprehensible manner. What I liked most about this resource was that it encourages the view to celebrate the neurodiversity of all humans.  What were my challenges? While completing research this week one of my greatest challenges was evaluating resources. When I set my distal lea...
